# Star items and searches for quick access

Starring items and searches lets you quickly access important content from the sidebar, keeping your most-used items always within reach.

## Star Items

Select an item and press `S` to star it. It appears in the sidebar under **Starred**. Click it there to jump back to the item, wherever you are in the outline.

Press `S` again to remove the star.

## Star Searches

You can also star searches to save powerful filters and queries: After performing a search, **click the star icon** in the search field.

The search will be added to your sidebar under your starred list. Clicking a starred search will automatically re-run the search.

### Starred Searches & Notifications

Starred searches are *live* — NotesGarden continuously monitors them and tracks which matching items you have and haven’t seen yet.

#### Unread count badge

When new items match a starred search, a counter badge appears next to its name in the sidebar. Clicking the starred search opens the results pre-filtered to show those unread items, so you can catch up quickly.

Unread count is limited to 1,000 items per starred search.

#### Email notifications

You can opt in to receive email digests for any starred search so that new matches are delivered to your inbox even when you’re not actively using the app.

#### To enable:

1. Click the three-dot menu (⋯) next to the starred search in the sidebar.
2. Select **Email on new results** to toggle it on. A checkmark indicates it is active.

Emails are sent after a short delay to ensure you’ve had a chance to see results in-app first.

#### Mark all as read (from the sidebar)

To dismiss all unread notifications for a starred search without opening the results modal, click the three-dot menu (⋯) next to the starred search and select **Mark all as read**.

#### View all results

The three-dot menu (⋯) on a starred search also includes **View all results**, which opens the full search results modal regardless of read state.

## Managing Starred Items

You can manage your starred items and searches through the starred item menu. To open it, **click the three dots** next to the starred item in the sidebar.

Available options:

- **Mark all as read** (searches only): Dismiss all unread notifications for this search.
- **Email on new results** (searches only): Toggle email notifications for new matches.
- **View results** (searches only): Open the search results modal.
- **Remove from Starred**: Remove the item or search from your starred list.
- **Rename**: Rename the starred item or search directly in the sidebar.

## Tips

- You can re-organize your sidebar manually by dragging starred items up or down.
